Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory

In Andrew Goodwin's 'dancing in the distraction factory' he discusses six points in connection with his theory on music videos.

The six points are as followed;

1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristcis.

2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.

3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.

4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeristic treatment of the female body.

6. There is often intertexual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music, videos etc).

An example of a music video that uses Goodwin's theory is 50 Cent's candy shop video. this music video uses voyeurism. Andrew Goodwin feels that in music videos there is frequently voyeristic treatment of the female body. This music video also demonstartes genre characteristics, as many R&B music videos include the same things such as girls, money and cars and this video includes exactly these.

In candy shop right near the begginning it shows 50 cent looking in on the girls.

Also it shows the women in the video in a very sexual way wearing tight clothes, or minimal clothing. This is a very stereotypic R&B style video.

In the majority of R&B music videos the women in them are shown as very flirty and sexual by the way they act, dance and the clothes they are wearing as in this video the women are wearing small tight clothes or even underwear in some cases. Also the dancing they do is very sexual and flirty.

Another music video that refelects one of Andrew Goodwin's theories is; is natasha bedingfield's these words this is a good example of andrew goodwin's theory that there is a relationship between music and visuals. Andrew Goodwin identified that the visuals in a music video may be edited in time to the beat or rhythm of the song.

In natasha bedingfield's these words video her actions and the camera movements fit in with the rhythm of the music. For example; they change camera shots at the same speed of the music beats, another example is when natasha bedingfield cuts three flowers it is in time with the rhythm of the music and her singing.

Dear Moderator

My name is Laura-Rose Wilson, my candidate number is 8305 and my centre number is 16829.

I have enjoyed creating a front cover, contents page and double page spread for my music magazine LOUD, and I have learnt many things such as being able to use photoshop easily and to be able to create a prezzi.

I hope you enjoy the work that I have produced.

This is the front cover and contents page of my st marks sixth form magazine for my preliminary task. I have re-posted it so it is up the top so that it is easily seen when being viewed by the moderator.

Evaluation

http://prezi.com/6zwh4kp1a64g/music-magzine-evaluation/

This is my music magazine LOUD's evaluation in the form of a prezi.

This is my magazine's double page spread, I continued the colour scheme from my front cover and contents page onto the double page spread. Also I have got the LOUD logo on the double page spread as well as the contents page so that the readers will will know where this page is from.

This is the contents page for my music magazine LOUD, I have continued the colour scheme from my front over onto the contents page. On this page I have included an image of Daniel who is from the main story of my magazine, I also have placed a picture of another singer on the contents page to show the readers who else is in the magazine. For the featuring stories I have numbered that on what pages they are on then and given it a heading and then underneath put in more detail what this page/pages contain.

Front cover

This is my finished front cover for my music magazine LOUD. The reason I chose the name LOUD for my magazine as I felt that it fit best with the genre of music and I wanted a short and memorable name for my readers. I decided on a colour scheme of the colours pink, white and black to carry throughout my magazine so that you can see how they are all together. I also used yellow and green so that they stand out and fit in with the pop genre, as pop music tends to be recognised as bright and loud and exciting and this is what I wanted my magazine to present.

I have finished my front cover, contents page and double page spread for my music mgazine LOUD and these are them above.

I have started to create my prezi for my media evaluation, I have nearly finished with my prezi all I need to do is get the pictures of my front cover from the school computer so I can put them into my prezi and then I will have finished.

For my photoshoot I used a Nikon coolpix p100 because this is a high quality camera so the pictures that they would produce would also be high quality.
When I was choosing who I wanted to use for my artisit for my music magazine LOUD I researched into some pop stars for some inspiration on who to pick, how to style them and what type of personality I should present to the readers. I came across Tinie Tempah and he is who inspired me for my overall artist.

These photos above are what helped me to style Daniel, so the similarities between Tinie Tempah and Daniel in the magazine are very obvious.

Artists clothing

When choosing the clothes that I wanted my artist to wear I looked at pop stars and their fashion so that I could chose clothes that fit into the pop genre. In the above pictures these are the main outfits my artist wore when I was taking the pictures for my magazine. I feel that his overall image fits in well with the pop music genre and he looks like a pop star.

USP

Unique selling point

For my music magazine LOUD I had to think of a unique selling point for the magazine, the one I decided on using "Pop magazine with all the latest hits and music news" I chose a short and memorable sentence for my usp so that the readers could remember it easily. I placed this at the top of my front cover in a yellow banner so it stands out and draws the readers in.

Colour scheme

For my music magazine LOUD I decided to have a colour scheme that would potentially run throughout my whole magazine, this is another form of house style for my music magazine. The colours that I used repeatedly on my front cover, contents page and double page spread were white, black and pink.

The images above are examples of the colour scheme I used.
For my music magazine I wanted a logo to represent the name of my magazine that would be recognised by my readers. This would be the branding of the magazine. I had originally come up with a design for this but when I was using photoshop and trying to create this design it was a lot harder than I had thought so I came up with a much simpler design that would be as affective.

The image above is the logo for my music magazine LOUD.
For my media evaluation there is seven questions that I have to answer, the questions below are what I need to answer;

-       In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

-       How does your media product represent particular social groups?

-       What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? (IPC and EMAP)

-       Who would be the audience for your media product?

-       How did you attract? Address your audience?

-       What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

-       Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

We had to evaluate our media product which was my music magazine LOUD in a different way other than an essay, so I have decided to produce my evaluation in a prezi.

I was going to use this image of Daniel and lucy on my double page spread as in the interview Daniel talks about him and Lucy dating, but I decided against using this in the end because in the interview he explains his relationship with lucy so with an image of them two it would ruin the point of the "exclusive" interview.

interview questions

The following questions are the ones that I kept to use for my music magazine LOUD's double page spread, I decided on keeping these questions as I felt that these would be the ones that would be most appealing to my target audience of girls aged 12 to 17.

Hi Daniel, thanks for coming here today I know you must have a very busy schedule..

When did you know that you wanted to be a singer?

If your singing career didn't work out what were you going to do instead?

Have you or would you ever consider acting?

Where did you grow up?

What was your childhood like living there?

Who or what is it that inspires you to write such good music?

Do you get stage fright when having to perform in front of so many people?

Is there anything you do to overcome it?

What is it like to be recognised now when you go out?

Have you got any crazy fans that you see everywhere you go?

So, we've had many people writing in convincing me to ask you this question..

Is it true you are dating Lulu?

Where, when, how did you meet her?

Well I wouldn't have expected that Daniel! Thank you very much for much for coming, I wish you all the best in your career and I’m sure we will be seeing a lot of you from now on!

Above is a photo of my double page spread for my music mgazine LOUD, I have included the five images above in my double page spread of my main stories artist daniel. I chose to carry out a question and answer interview with daniel as I felt that this would be well suited for my music magazine's target audience. In this interview I asked questions that I felt my audience would be interested in knowing about him.
For my double page spread I removed some of the question and answers that I had planned to use, the reason I did this was because I wouldn't have fit them all on at a font that would be easily readable also after reading through the questiions again I felt that some of them didn't need to be in there so I removed these and kept the most intersting and important questions and answers that the readers would most likely want to read.
For my music magazine task everything I did was done by myself with one exception. I took all of the pictures that are on my front cover, contents page and double page spread and all the other information on the page is from me. The exception in this is the barcode I used on my front cover, I got this off google images to use for my magazine's barcode.

Contents page completed

This is my finished contents page, I added the text that tells the readers what is in the magazine. For this text I wrote a title then in a smaller text and different colour put in more detail what this story consists of.

Friday, 23 March 2012

Above is an image of what my contents page looks like so far.

Today for my music magazine project I started on my contents page again because my work got lost twice, I have completed the title/border at the top of the contents page, I have also cropped two photos and placed them on my contents page, I also added boxes onto the pictures saying what the story is and what page it is on, all I need to add to the contents page now is the text explaining what each story is and what page they are on then my contents page will be finished.

Front cover

This is a picture of my front cover for my music magazine, I wanted to have a lot of colours on my front cover to fit with the pop genre but I didn't want it to look to over the top. So the main colours I stuck with were purple/pink, yellow and black and these will be consistent throughout my magzine, so this is why I chose to have a plain white background so that the colours stand out more and so the text won't clash with the bakground. I also have one bit of green on the place for Daniel's name I chose to do this because it is the main story on my magazine and so having his name in bright green it stands out so therefore the readers will notice it easily.

I have also wrote them out in tge order that I plan on having them in and have written thm out how i would in the magazine.

ANSWER
In today's media lesson I finished off my front cover for my music magazine "LOUD" i made some changes to my magazine after completing a feedback task in the class, so I used the feedback I was given to try and improve my music magazine. There was only a few changes and adjustments that needed to be made to the colours, font and placing of some texts, making some text a different colour or bold so that they stand out. After I had finished my front cover i moved onto my contents page where I cropped two images and placed them at the bottom so, and added in the title of the magazine "LOUD" in the same font and colour at the top of the page as this is creating a brand for the music magazine. I also added a title for the contents page and that is as far as I got on photoshop.

Feeback

In class today we swapped work with eachother and gave other people in the class feedback on their work. The feedback that I recieved for my front cover was as followed;

The first question on the feedback sheet was "who do you think the audience is for this magazine? How did you arrive at this idea?"
The answers I recieved for this were;
- mostly girls aged 14-18, use of pink and the "reveals all"
- 10-14, as it says pop all over it.

The second question was; "What genre is this music magazine? What is it about the cover which gives you this impression?"
- Pop/RnB, use of bright colours and text, and the title 'LOUD'
- Pop, as there is pop all over it

Other feedback I recieved from this task was;
- That my main image looks good as Daniel is standing out fronm the magazine, over the title.
- To use some different fonts and add more bright colours onto it.
- To use more colourful text as some are harder to read than others.
- Add a secondary image to the front cover.

From this feedback I made a few changes to the front cover of my music magazine such as I changed the font for the coverlines to
"Lithos Pro"
so that they stood out more and were more interesting and fun. I also changed the colour of some specific words on the magazine such as the Rihanna in the star shape and I changed the word Loud at the bottom of the page to the same colour as the title loud and made it bold so it stands out.

Branding

Branding is used in magazines with specific things such as font, colour, logo, etc. It is used so that the audience of this magazine recognise this and relate this to this specific magzine. Branding in magazines is usually done with the style of the title which is then carried through the magazines.

Below is Vibe's front cover and contents page as an example of house style. The style of the title on the front cover and the title on the contents page are the same. They are both white, in capital letters and also the same font. This way you can match the contents page with the front cover if they was seperate.

For my music magazine I will be using my title to brand my magazine, I am going to have the word loud in capital letters in pink and a pink box around the L of loud. By having a box round the L therefore I can have the L with the box on each page of my magzine instead of the whole title. So the L with the box round with be in a way a logo for my music magazine and this will be something that will represent my magazine.

These are the four images that I took of lucy to put in my contents page, I will be using the first and second image but not the third and fourth. The first picture is better than the last image because the first image was taken from further away than the last so there is not any of the guitar cut out like there is in the last one and the guitar is a big part of the picture so it needs to be clearly seen in the image. Out of the two middle images I will be using the top one, I think that this image has more personality and fits better with the pop genre of my music magazine.

These are the four close up images for the front cover of my music magazine.

This is the image i decided to use for my front cover, as the background is plain and there is a lot of space around Daniel for text. Also his facial expression and outfit fits in with the genre of pop magazine.

This was one of the pictures I was going to use for my front cover but there is too much in the background that would interfere with the text, and there is not as much room around him like the first image.

These are the other two images I was thinking of using for the front cover of my music magazine, but I prefere the first image to these two as these two seem more plain and not as bright and fitting with the genre like the first one is.
